Retinol Concerns for Pigmentation Correction
Retinol has exploded in popularity over the past few years in skincare, praised for its anti-aging and hyperpigmentation benefits. However, many consumers have had mixed results with it. When formulating our Body Pigmentation and Dark Spot Correcting Duo (launching soon!), we had to decide whether or not to include retinol. Ultimately, we chose not to include retinol for several reasons.
1. Body Skin Sensitivity
Retinol can cause redness, dryness, and irritation, especially when first introduced or if used too frequently. Some people may experience peeling or flaking as the skin adjusts to retinol. This can be very uncomfortable as we can experience more friction on body skin throughout the day compared to face skin.
2. Sun Sensitivity
Retinol makes the skin more sensitive to UV rays, increasing the risk of sunburn and sun damage. It's essential to apply sunscreen multiple times during the day when using retinol to prevent further hyperpigmentation and protect against sun damage.
3. Retinol requires a more steps to bring skin back to balance.
Additional moisturizing, sunscreen and skin barrier protections is needed to counteract the effects of retinol. This leads to a tedious skin care regimen that is hard to maintain, especially for your entire body skin.
